Not so fast.
Here at AudioEye, we recently found ourselves in this exact situation. We launched our AudioEye Marketplace, with tiers of accessibility solutions available at different price points, but, after conducting diligence on several providers, our preferred subscription management and billing software provider, Chargebee, met our unique integration requirements, but wasn’t as well-versed enough in digital accessibility to meet our accessibility requirements. Surprisingly, accessibility hadn’t been raised as an issue from their customers and it simply hadn’t been on their radar. They didn’t know their service was inaccessible for someone relying upon an assistive technology to navigate and engage.
Not unusual by any means.
Reality is, every day we encounter website owners, designers and developers who don’t know digital accessibility is even a thing.
That’s why AudioEye exists. Our mission is to eradicate every single barrier to digital access. If every organization had digital accessibility figured out, we wouldn’t exist. We love educating. We love creating customized solutions. And we love aligning with businesses with good intent. Instead of turning our back on Chargebee, we took to meeting with their executives and quickly got buy-in to prioritize accessibility.
As our relationship began to take shape, Chargebee’s Chief Product officer, Omar Nawaz, immediately prioritized making its experience accessible, “As technology continues to evolve and consumers are more reliant upon online transactions and communications, we are committed to providing equal access an experience free of barriers for everyone. Conversely, there are companies that fight digital accessibility. Some have even taken that fight to the highest Court in the country, claiming the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) only applies to the physical world – not the digital one. We fundamentally disagree (and so do most Courts), but we don’t believe forward progress should cease to exist just because day-one accessibility may not.
So what’s your takeaway? When you’re evaluating vendors, digital accessibility must play a crucial part in the diligence process. No question accessibility should be among those functional requirements to operate an inclusive, modern website. But if the right partner doesn’t yet understand digital accessibility or have a solution to ensure full inclusivity, don’t give up. If they’re willing, educate them, and lean on us to help. Because when more of us commit to accessibility, we all win.
