Differences between WCAG 2.0, WCAG 2.1, and WCAG 2.2

WCAG (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines) versions 2.0, 2.1, and 2.2 are sets of guidelines designed to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities. While WCAG 2.0 established foundational standards in 2008, WCAG 2.1 (2018) and WCAG 2.2 (2021) extended these guidelines to address evolving technologies and diverse user needs, ensuring that digital content is accessible to people with disabilities. Our platform helps you reach all levels of compliance up to WCAG 2.2, which is the industry standard of accessibility.

WCAG 2.1 consists of 78 success criteria, which are pass-or-fail statements that address accessibility barriers such as low-contrast text, ambiguous anchor text, and keyboard accessibility issues. These criteria are organized into three levels of conformance: Level A (the most essential and least strict), Level AA, and Level AAA (most strict).

Legal precedent in the U.S. shows that courts generally consider Level AA – the standard level of WCAG compliance  – to be the benchmark for demonstrating ADA compliance. So, how can you make sure your website  is accessible and compliant to WCAG 2.1? The best WCAG testing tools help you audit your website for WCAG accessibility. AudioEye helps you detect and fix more issues with our automated and expert, real-life testing.
