Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) 101

What does the ADA and how does this apply to your business?

First, what does the ADA stand for?

The ADA stands for Americans with Disabilities Act, a landmark civil rights law signed in 1990. The act prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in both physical and online spaces.

So what is ADA compliance? ADA compliance simply means your business meets the standards the law sets out. The ADA applies to most businesses with 15 or more employees and any business that serves the public, including restaurants, retail stores, hotels, and websites.

The purpose behind the act is simple— to ensure people with disabilities have the same access to public and online spaces.

What happens if your website is not compliant with the ADA? You're exposed to lawsuits, federal complaints, and fines. At the end of the day, it's about making sure everyone can access your business, both in physical and online spaces.

  • The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in places of public accommodation, and most businesses are required to comply. Non-compliance can face federal complaints, fines and fees, and, in severe cases, lawsuits.
